Synopsis
I realized after much writing that-- while I love writing Highlander: Pariah and will continue to update it-- fanfiction really is the dark side of literature and nobody will ever really take it seriously, no matter how good it might be. Pariah doesn't even really fall within the traditional definition of fanfiction (not being a slash or based on any canonical characters), but even its loose affiliation with the setting drops a legal and social stigma on it that ensures it'll never see print in any form.
I decided to write an all-original piece of fiction that I might really try to publish someday, based loosely on an RPG setting/adventure that I created a while back called "Sisyphus 1," a sci-fi/war/horror game that never got off the ground. It's a futuristic tale of mankind's colonization of our solar system. Sudden scientific discoveries led to rapid technological development, and a renewed space race between the major world powers. An extraterrestrial "land-grab" ensued, and for years the United Nations fought politically over the rights of soverign nations to claim or annex other planets or terrestrial satellites, especially considering commercial and religious interests. These debates were never destined to end to anyone's satisfaction. It was enough to usher in a new era of political intrigue and espionage.
The Patch follows Corporal Sonya Nero, a United States Colonial Space Marine recently reassigned to a garrison on Callisto known as Sisyphus 1 after a disasterous tour of duty known among the Marines as the "Kuiper Run." She's a decorated officer, a battle-hardened warrior of the future loaded with the hottest cybernetics and the instincts of a born killer. She's also a broken-down veteran on her third tour, nearly crippled by injuries and held together purely by drugs, cyber-implants and a burning grudge that might burn her out before she gets the chance to fade away.
This is supposed to be a quiet post, someplace she can finish her last tour away from combat and controversy, but there are powers at work coming to Callisto, both from without and within that threaten all of humanity. She could be the only thing that holds them back.
