The Spoony Experiment

Let’s Play Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh (Hour 3)

by Scarlett on November 21, 2008 · 47 comments

What spells terror like a visit to your psychiatrist? Prepare yourself for a load of long, talky scenes that somehow makes the Senate scenes in the Star Wars prequels seem taut and suspenseful.

Ah well, maybe now we’ll finally figure out what’s wrong with Curtis.

Is it just me, or is all the video from 42 minutes to 30 minutes not there?

2
Red Mundus December 29, 2008 at 11:04 am

Yep, same problem, video seems to stop at that time.

Pen December 29, 2008 at 2:46 pm

It’s the same problem over here. Everything from the club is missing. The video anyway, the audio still plays like normal, but it’s just black from 15:05 to 24:10. Great video and commentary, but y’might wanna look into that!

Hey, I knew I recognized the chick making herself bleed in the psych ward.

My god, it’s the first Twilight fan!

Touch o' Soul January 6, 2009 at 2:57 pm

Maybe Spoony fixed it, or I’m just lucky. I had no issues playing the whole video through.

AshJWilliams January 10, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Haha, nice Gozu reference. (The soup ladle thing at about 8:00)

(I can’t seem to find an email at which to contact you) After returning to work the day after bob’s death and going through your emails/documents, you find correspondence from Eddie Gein. You (spoony) comment on how he (Gein) wears clown make-up. This is not true. John Wayne Gacy was the part-time clown NOT Gein. Gacy was the psudo pedephile turned painter. Gein had a mother issue (among other issues) & was the basis for Psycho & Tx chainsaw murders…

<3 the watercooler Deja Vu.
Thanks for making the game survivable to watch!

PSX-gamer January 17, 2009 at 1:25 am

That Joey-Fatone guy is awsome!

Jenny January 21, 2009 at 1:14 pm

with blip, do you get to choose what your still image is? because the image of trevor and curtis before you hit the play button is so fantastic it cant be random

Lestat2150 January 21, 2009 at 5:33 pm

The lady in the psyche ward who chews at her arm to make it bleed was in the first phantasmagoria. She was the poor mother of the retarded farmer guy and they both lived in the mansion’s garage. She dies in the first game but we dont see it. I was reading a review about phantasmagoria 2 on wikipedia and nobody mentions that she was in both games, the only reference to the first game they say is the main characters novel is in curtis craigs house when he looks on his bookshelf and reads them off the first time.

MORTAL KOMBAT! Choose your destiny!

SlabmcChesthair January 22, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Nice!!! “an inside look at Stephen Harper’s campain headquarters”, are you by chance a Canadian Spoony?

14
Hanged January 26, 2009 at 12:35 pm

It’s Hanged btw. I know it sounds like it should be Hung but it’s Hanged.

15
Cpt.Dani February 15, 2009 at 2:06 pm

It is hanged if it’s:”They hanged that person yesterday”, but it’s hung if it’s “They hung that picture yesterday”. I must say this commentated playthrough is awesome. It just is.

16
bla February 22, 2009 at 1:51 pm

wtf at those three random people dancing outside the club

17
ThreeHeadedMonkey February 22, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Great stuff, man! Awesome game, too.

AntiDark777 February 23, 2009 at 1:19 pm

When your in the secret room are you supose to grab the hammer next to the file cabinet?

20
social_geek March 2, 2009 at 6:33 pm

Trever was the one that found the body, remember?

21
Schadenfreude March 10, 2009 at 4:10 pm

I think the S&M club set is the same set as the psychiatrist’s office.

22
BTMadness March 16, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Great lines:

“What is love!” Hehehe!

“I’ve brought my Magic Cards, there’s a nice table here…”

“I just understand why people need to feel pain to have fun.”
“If that were true for me, this would be the greatest game in the world.”

“That’s why you should get circumcised!”

BTW… “I can’t break away!” what’s that a reference to? You’d think I’d know since I grew up in the eighties as well, but it’s not coming to me…

23
Murky March 24, 2009 at 2:47 pm

“I heard that Curtis!”
lmao….

24
Sword_Song April 1, 2009 at 12:18 am

Does anybody else notice that the toolbox says bob? I just thought that was weird.

25
Danimal April 16, 2009 at 4:20 pm

@Schadenfreude – Breakaway is a Big Pig song from the 80s… I remember it from Bill and Ted.

26
Lumberjack April 18, 2009 at 10:16 am

The constant gay jokes are pretty annoying, but the rest is really funny.

27
Raygirl April 19, 2009 at 6:08 am

Mr Spoony, would you consider putting these videos together to make one long downloadable movie? I’d love to have this ‘Lets Play’ on my iPod to listen to, cause it makes me laugh so hard. But alas my poor laptop can’t handle the giant file size and whines like a bitch when I load it, and I’m not a techie so don’t know how to download/edit Blip videos. Would that be a lot to request?

He’s woozy from the drink because it’s most likely spiked – making everything afterwards probably mutilation and rape, which wouldn’t be as amusing. I might be wrong though.

Sorry for killing the mood if I did.

Legather May 9, 2009 at 8:07 am

The ‘Revelation’ email is sent to Peter Sutcliffe, following on from the Gein theme Sutcliffe is the real name of the Yorkshire Ripper.

Love the let’s play series Spoony. Perhaps we’ll see a Phantasmagoria 1 LP?

Facepalm May 12, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Liked how you read the emails in the Dramatic Reading voice. I also caught some MST3k references in there! That is my favorite show of all time.

JD May 16, 2009 at 1:31 pm

“tatatatarattatta MORTAL KOOMBAAAT!!” X)

32
Karsten May 27, 2009 at 7:30 am

Manos reference! Love it. Torgo is possibly the most awesome character ever.

“There is no way out of here. It’ll be dark soon. There is no way out of here.”

33
Alex June 3, 2009 at 1:45 am

One of the characters in the game, Curtis’ best friend Trevor, is openly gay, and it is later revealed Curtis harbors feelings for him, leading to a thwarted (and long foreshadowed) kiss between the two late in the game…..

Taken from Wikipedia…. Where was that scene in the review?

34
Maniac July 2, 2009 at 2:26 pm

So far I’m over halfway through the second hour and I’ve been dying laughing this whole time watching this. I’m so glad this site exists. I really missed out on those old cd-rom games. The only one I have played is Star Trek Borg.

What kind of bookstore do you have that sells these terriffic old games? I want a place like that here!

Oh and c’mon, censorship? C’mon man, show it!

35
Mousey July 16, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Loved that Chasing Amy reference… now that I’ve seen that flick.

36
Sigma July 21, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Phantasmagoria! A puzzle of flesh!!!

Is this what normal people live like? I’ve never seen a live normal person.

37
Carbiner July 22, 2009 at 10:17 am

Fruit loops and cheerios!

38
Lindsay August 15, 2009 at 4:17 am

Gotta love Phantasmagoria’s sensitive depiction of mental illness.

39
Rmaggedyn August 25, 2009 at 7:50 am

Torgo!

40
humanist September 1, 2009 at 12:36 pm

“Did you hear that? That was the sound of a plot point dropping like a 500-pound bomb.”

Got to be one of the awesomest lines in this entire review. Maybe even second best. And since I like to riff on movies, books, and tv shows too, I know it’s one I’ll be using in future.

Ahh, and so ends the saga of the Dreaming Tree waiter’s valiant efforts to balance the restaurant’s accounts. If the above line is one of the best in the review, those account-balancing commentary were among the best sequences of the review, right on up there with the grand finale.

ToketsuKitsune September 7, 2009 at 7:44 am

Hey spoony had a random moment singing the song from the opening to Bill & Ted.

42
Byrd September 22, 2009 at 9:45 am

Friggin’ hilarious, Spoony. Never have hours of interminably boring gameplay been so entertaining.

PHANTASMAGORIA!!

43
Ensiferum September 30, 2009 at 9:40 pm

“Doctor Who bedsheets.”
I can’t stop laughing, haha.

44
Jouzze October 6, 2009 at 10:54 am

Hmm, the waiter in the S&M club looked cinda like the one in the Dream Tree. Interesting.

45
Sigma October 21, 2009 at 1:09 am

I just noticed that the bouncer goes between having and not having glasses.

46
ThePotatoKing October 22, 2009 at 5:00 pm

“Disco dance! disco dance!”
The mentally ill are always good for a laugh or two (or as many times as you can click on them).

47
ThePotatoKing November 9, 2009 at 12:07 am

I don’t think the developers understood the meaning of “psychological horror”…
