The Spoony Experiment

FMV Hell – Microcosm

by Scarlett on April 6, 2008 · 110 comments

The Spoony One makes his triumphant return in this review of the worst, most boring game to ever blight the PC or the SegaCD: Microcosm. Take a Fantastic Voyage through FMV Hell and see if you can survive “the ultimate CD-ROM game.” But first, we need to take a look at the most grotesquely over-fluffed instruction manual ever written for a game. Keep a pen handy, or you’ll regret it…

the music you heard from when spoony failed to write the password down is the death scene music from Platoon. Cheers

@Creoth; it’s from Chrono Trigger, when you’re racing Johnny the Robot Biker, lol. It’s called “Bike Chase”

My dad bought this game along time ago. Always thought the case looked really badass. Now i know the horror that is Microcosm and won’t even give this game a second look : )

Why the hell was 40 pages of longwinded background needed for a RAIL SHOOTER?

55
ECNM May 22, 2009 at 6:58 am

D Rock, it’s called “immense pretension.”
Rumors say it can make nightmares come to life.

However, some say it forges only fairly uninteresting and mediocre weapons of mild discomfort.

We select few know it’s power: The power to rape your soul. Twice. Whilst on fire.

D Rock, as I’ve speculated elsewhere, I get the distinct impression that Psygnosis wanted to put more into the game than just the rail shooter. But the budget was probably blown to Hell and back by hiring Name talent for the soundtrack, using cinematics and CGI for cutscenes and other such extras–not to mention the T-shirt and CD giveaways that came with the PC version. Thus, what portion of the game was finished, as well as what cutscenes were already made, were thrown together into the final result.
Sure, such things are standard fare in today’s games, PC and console, but back in the day they were very new–and very expensive.
And yes, I’m thaqt darkdriver. ;)

I can’t believe I never caught the theme to ‘Alleycat Blues’ from TMNT 4 in the background! O_o

Excellent review even to this day, Spoony.

Objection!
He’s comparing the CD-Rom version to the Sega CD version. Maybe the computer has those features, like music. The Sega CD version, as far as we know, doesn’t make those claims.

Darren roberts June 9, 2009 at 12:08 pm

OBJECTION!
i want to listen to lemings 2

Xel June 13, 2009 at 8:36 am

Good review Spoony, as well as good taste in books! Big ol’ hardcopy edition of Snow Crash right next to your sock drawer.

Eric June 16, 2009 at 8:19 am

Great work!
I hope you go on that trip sometime.

Psygnosis did release a few turds back in the day, but what mistakes they made are more than repaid for because they went on to make the stellar Colony Wars games on PS1. Those titles are more epic than just about anything else from that time.

Juxta July 14, 2009 at 11:19 pm

67
BLAIRMONSTER.j2 July 17, 2009 at 4:16 pm

I actually tried to watch the intro (all of it) and I just had the unresistable URGE to take my ipod or start playing MGS on my psp….

68
SCSLJeStEr9000 July 19, 2009 at 3:04 am

69
SCSLJeStEr9000 July 19, 2009 at 3:10 am

Frankly Shocked July 21, 2009 at 11:40 pm

Why do you own a Louis Armstrong statue if you can’t tell the difference between Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie? That looks nothing like Dizzy Gillespie. Oops.

72
Garth Arizona July 22, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Damn, Frankly Shocked beat me to it. That’s Giant Louie Armstrong, not Giant Dizzy Gillespie. But, who the hell cares. Great review Spoony!

Grrr this game gives me a headache by just LOOKING at it.. The graphic is so crappy that my eyes wants to commit suacide.. but hey the graphics is the least of this games problem.. if i were to tell how i feel about this game it would take about the same time as this reveiw…

Spoony’s videos always have the best soundtracks. I just wish he added a bit more detail at the end of the video about what these songs are called, and list them in order of appearance. Saying something is from a certain game doesn’t help much since games often have dozens of tracks. Mario RPG, for example, has 53 tracks.

The song playing near the end of the game is “Strut” from Space Channel 5. Took a while to figure it out so I thought I would share it.

83
Cade August 21, 2009 at 10:43 pm

So fast and furious…this gameplay is so amazing it draws you in from the first shot and keeps you captivated and on the edge of your seat for hours!

…yeah…

Ha. Nice review. You should make a review of the X-Files FMV game you’ve mentioned a few times. I’d love to hear all the crap you say about that one, and watching you tear it apart would be the best.

84
Bored2BPsycho August 23, 2009 at 6:20 am

Why was there soooo much about the planets in the system…
when you spend the entire friggin game inside a man?

85
Esteban August 24, 2009 at 5:46 am

Kinda giving yourself away putting an issue of Doktor Sleepless on the screen, aren’t you?

86
Jack August 25, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Sad thing is i still have the sega cd version of this piece of crap game. Weirdly though its in a bundle pack with a game based on the old Prime comic book of all things.

87
Tenjikurounin August 27, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Its called Adagio For Strings By Samuel Barber.

88
cheapcameraguy September 4, 2009 at 8:05 pm

90

Bashing Amiga music for no particular music. Bad choice.

91
Tomhosnappy September 13, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Hay Spoony has a black and wight cat! You can tell when he is playing the piano.

92
IL September 21, 2009 at 4:37 am

The music that plays when Spoony doesn’t have time to write the password is “Adagio for Strings” by Samuel (?) Barber. It’s also in Homeworld.

93
Jenny September 24, 2009 at 3:20 am

I’m curious to know, what is the music that plays when he’s narrating the story introduction from the booklet? He’s used it the Warrior review as well when reading the first page.

94
Dylan September 24, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Actually, the song that plays when Spoony fails to write the password is called ‘Adagio for Strings’ by Samuel Barber.

95
TigerBear September 25, 2009 at 10:22 am

You are going to get arrested for looking at the address and then pulling a knife acting like you are going to murder the people there.

Alllex September 29, 2009 at 12:00 pm

Mike October 5, 2009 at 7:20 am

Yo Spoony, that Benchmade you got there, is it Nimravus? Can’t see well on the video. Great review.

98
Ultimategamer October 20, 2009 at 10:05 pm

I just noticed (sorry if i sound dumb), but the music that plays at 0:53 is the Onnet town theme from Earthbound, i LOVE that game!

99
Straker October 25, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I dunno Spoony, i think I would RATHER get a colonoscopy while watching Inner Space than play this game…as a matter of fact i think I would actually enjoy it better. XP This game is almost as painful to play as that other one there, what was it…Omega Boost! Jeeze. That actually had decent music and shit but GAWD was that boring and that stupid computer bitch every time you got hit asking “Are you OK?” but only retarded sounding so it was more like “Ahh ooo oh-gay?” UGHHHH! fucking stupid frustrating game.
